MATHEMATICS COMPETITIONS
Top students from Algebra I (Mikal Adams, Aaron Collins, and Amber Eldridge), Algebra II (Liz Anderson, Angie Rogers, Janna Sims, Luke Hippe), Geometry (James Hawthorne and Amanda Campbell), and Trigonometry (John Askew, Jason vonSchlutter, and Becky Stang) are invited to attend two upcoming math competitions. The first one is Friday, April 14, at Cumberland College. The second will be at Calvary Christian School in Covington, Kentucky, on Thursday, April 27. These students will have an opportunity to flex their mental muscles against other top students in the state and perhaps leave with a trophy, plaque, ribbon, or even a graphing calculator. (These activities look good on college and work applications.)
We need drivers–there are outlet malls near Covington and historic Williamsburg/Cumberland Falls to keep volunteer drivers from getting bored.
Pray for the students participating and for a safe trip.
CABLE IN THE CLASSROOM
BGBS now has the advantage of "Cable in the Classroom." Our library was wired with cable free of charge and teachers can tape educational shows and then use them in the classroom. This will enhance our classrooms by giving students access to materials that make learning fun. Space exploration, historical recreations, mathematic aids, and live literature are all available through this program. No doubt, students and teachers will like "Cable in the Classroom."
FINANCIAL AID FOR COLLEGE
Get started: Fill out and file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form as soon as possible. These are available from our guidance counselor, Mrs. Nan Robinson in the office. Use last year's tax forms and a recent paycheck stub (if applicable) to estimate earnings.
Get help: That's what Mrs. Robinson is here for...talk to her! Don't hire a financial-aid consultant or pay for a "scholarship search" before checking references. Be wary of anyone promising a scholarship for an upfront fee.
Go surfing: For up-to-date information on federal and state programs, see http://www.fafsa.ed. gov, http://www.firn.,edu/doe or http://www.ed.gov/. For student aid or to use scholarship databases: http://www.fastweb.com, http:// www.cashe.com or http://www. srnexpress.com.
Scholarship essays: Pick a topic you can use for several applications. Ask one of your teachers to give you tips and to check your essay for grammar and spelling.
Transcripts: Go by the office and get a copy of yours from Mrs. Jufer. Have copies on hand so you can quickly respond to scholarship offers.
SENIORS: Now is the time to be applying for college!!!
MORE INFORMATION ON COLLEGES AND FINANCIAL AID
The U.S. Department of Education offers a wealth of information on government student-aid programs. You can even apply for some online there. If you are willing to type a long URL into your Web browser, you can read their excellent handbook, The Student Guide, at http://www.ed.gov/
THIRD AND FOURTH GRADE PRESENTATION
"A Heart To Change The World"– that's the title of the program that our third and fourth graders will be presenting on Thursday, May 4, at 7 p.m. Come watch our talented students!
FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
It seems that the attention spans of students (and some teachers) gets a little shorter when we return from spring break. The onset of good weather and the possibilities of fun combine to make school a not-so-attractive option. We have to remember, though, that there still remains several weeks of school. I encourage you not to let your mind wander to the point that your grades slip. There has been much hard work done this year and students can finish out on top with just a little extra concentration. Here's to a great finish.
1999 YEARBOOKS
If you ordered one, stop by the office to get it. Extras available-$12.
HAPPY BIRTHDAYS
Third grade teacher, Mrs. Dewana Robinson, celebrates her birthday this month on the 17th. And high school French teacher, Ms. Beth Rose will celebrate on May 21. Happy Birthday!
